Hopefully this isn't in the wrong area, but I was wondering what you thought about some of the recent use of tasers.
In particular, there was a man who was detained for 10 hours at a Vancouver airport, who didn't speak English. He did toss some things around the holding area, but I think that when he was hit with the taser the second time while lying on the ground, that was excessive. He died later.
I realize there are cases where the use of tasers is entirely justified.

I saw that on the news a well! I think that they had no right to taser him as the tape showed that when they arrived he calmed down somewhat and raised his hands. In some cases I think tasers are a good thing to use but in that situation at the airport there was absolutely no need for the officer to shoot him with one.

Lots of times people go crazy and start to get violent so tasers are used. The thing is, even though these people often have started to surrender or calm down, the cops are still in an "excited" mode and often tase the guy again before they can calm down as well. And in these videos you also never heard what the suspect is saying. He could be provoking the cops.

I have seen many a video of the criminals still trying to get away or not cooperating and then they get tasered and everyone cries saying he was surrendering when he really was not.

I have also. Most the time these stories were just fabricated to make the police seem like cruel evil people. Like that case with the guy at the John Kerry speech. That was twisted in so many ways.

I think tasers aren't meant to kill people but they do so I don't think that they are a good idea at all personally. I Think that they need to be taken and thrown away.

There is less than a 5% fatality rate of persons that have had a Taser used on them. If you take the Taser off the market and "Throw them away", the only alternative that law enforcement will have left to use is lethal force.
So your saying that it is better to kill a criminal 100% of the time, then less than 5%?

Tasers are a non-lethal means of gaining compliance and work very well. When a perpetrator acts up, police juice them again. If they want to stop the shock, they simply need to comply. The whole issue of being abused by the use of a taser is so overblown. In the rare cases where someone dies after being tased, they are still ultimately responsible for the action. Had they not acted up they would not have been tased.

Actually, cases of actual victims dying from Tasers are supposedly very rare. Of most of the cases where victims have died from tasers is reportedly due to substance abuse by the victim earlier, in which case the taser only acted as a catalyst towards his/her fatality.
I agree with Stun_Gun in the case that tasers should not be ousted from the police system simply because of a few individuals in which the media has over exaggerated the reality too much.

The media jump on the Taser story every time they hear of a new incident simply because it makes for dramatic news. The news media, not the government, runs this country. They portray what they want us to hear, and like good little puppets, we dance along, content that we have heard the truth.
Too bad we can't come up with our own television channel to speak the real truth about what's going on around us.
Sorry... Kinda got off topic. I was having a moment. <grin>

The media does have a lot of control, but our government does regulate what it can and can not say. So who is in real control here?

Taser, the company, is asking distributors and merchants to do a background checks on customers that buy tasers. I believe that a tasers in the wrong hand can be lethal.

If somebody is attacking me and a taser accidently kills them thats fine with me. It kinda motivates me to get a bad-ass one.
