What is better to use, pepper spray or a Taser? By Taser I am thinking of the type that you press on someone and hit a button that gives them a shock.

A taser will certainly give you time to get away. But if you miss your target, you are out of luck.
With pepper spray, you have to hope the wind isn't blowing your direction -- otherwise, you're going to be wearing the pepper spray too.
I think either would do the trick -- give you enough time to get away.

I'd go for the pepper spray. They both have their pros and cons. To be honest I've been pepper sprayed by some friends and it is really painful!

I think papper spray is more useful, because you can a second shot if you need.

I also think that papper spray is more effective, because you can neutralize many attackers.

I'd go for the pepper spray my self, for the same reasons as the posters above me.

Can anyone recommend any alternatives to the pepper spray or taser?

I don't know any to be honest. But the taser isn't a good idea in my opinion. BTW - have any of you tried to make a home made taser? I just want you to know that that's a really bad idea and I don't encourage anyone to do it.

Cassy,
Actually there is a difference between a Taser and a stun gun. What you are describing is actually a stun gun. A Taser is a gun shaped device which fires two dart like probes up to 15 feet away and delivers a 5 second pulsed electrical charge which will immediately bring down an assailant. Additional 5 second charges can be administered by just pulling the trigger again.
A stun gun requires the stun gun to physically come in contact with the assailant, but likewise is very effective at bringing down and assailant. This is useful in situations were the assailant is right on top of the victim. Voltages range from 100,000 to 1 million volts, although very low amperage which prevents it from being lethal. This can be reapplied as many times as necessary until the battery dies.
Pepper spray is also effective at stopping an assailant, although there are some factors which will decrease it's effectiveness. Pepper sprays are not real effective on individuals which are high on drugs like PCP. A Taser on the other hand does not care if the person is high or not, when the muscles contract the individual is going down. Pepper sprays are also hindered by strong winds. As stated above, if the wind is strong or blowing at you, you stand the potential of spraying yourself or at least getting some of the mist on yourself. They also generally have around a 10 foot range.
Any of the above though are good non-lethal means of personal protection. Each having it's own pro's and con's.

Put me down for pepper spray. I've been told that the fogger models are the best ones to get. Is that true? Although I can't remember why I was told that.

Pepper spray takes aim. Now what if you miss your target then you are in trouble. I think you would be better off with a taser if you ask me.

If I really had to chose (which I don't, considering my community has a very low crime rate) I would chose the pepper spray. it doesn't leave any long term damage, wher e a taser can cause problems with the heart and brain.

I would choose a taser. With pepper spray I have to make sure I hit the attacker in the eye. If I miss then I am in trouble. With a taser it does not matter where I hit them.

I work for a pepper spray/mace/tazer store and I've come to find out that customer rather use pepper spray rather than tasers. (we did a survey too) Although, tasers can be very useful, it leaves a lot of room for error when being attacked or mugged. Pepper sprays by far a easy to carry, reliable and work fast. There's also a great variety to choose from.
