I have 2 medium sized dogs. I know that I definitely feel safer having dogs in the house or having a dog with me when I travel.

Do you have dogs? Do they make you feel safer?

I've heard that if a criminal is scoping out a house, they will bypass a house that has dogs.

Ofcourse they do. I used to feel way safer when I had a dog a couple of years ago ,but unfortunately it died. To be honest I'm thinking of getting a new one.
What kind of a dogs do you have? I used to have an afghan shephard.

I have a german shephard and that's one of the main reasons I can sleep without any worries \:\) Dogs can be great companions - you can have alot of fun with them ,but they can also protect you.

It depends on the breed I guess - a chihuahua would never make me feel safe \:\)

I had a friend ,who had one. They are pretty cute and intelligent. It could even open doors - that's the part that impressed me.

I'm thinking of getting a dog. Could anybody recommend any breed to me? Also - should I buy a young puppy or a grown dog?

I don't know about the breed ,but I'd suggest that you get a younger puppy ,because they haven't grown attached to their previous owner and you'll have more time to train them .

Personally, I think older dogs are great. Especially shelter dogs. They are so grateful to be adopted out of their shelter hell. They will be so loyal to you.

I have cocker spaniels -- they are a bit nippy even with us -- but they are very good guard dogs -- they bark and bite.

When I was growing up though, we always had adopted shelter dogs. They really do make fabulous pets.

I guess you do have a point. But it's good to hear that you've helped some shelter dogs.
BTW I don't see how dogs could make you feel safer - I mean you are a little cat after all :P

I don't have a dog, but the neighbors dog freaks me out whenever I walk past. I think their house was robbed one night and the dog actually stopped the thief. Amazing huh?

We have a little mutt which I do not like because I just don't. That is weird though since eversince I was a little girl I have always been a dog lover.

Anyhow..we keep her because she is good for patrolling the outside of the house at the very least.

I guess that the breed is not that important - it's more important to love the dog \:\)

I have two big alsatians and they have been well trained. I do feal safer because if they see an intruder or if someone hurts me and they recognize my screams they will attack to harm and if necesary to kill. Unfortenatly they wouldn't be able to do much if they got shot.

I guess it all depends on the type of dog as well as the specific training that the dog has had in regards to dealing with aggression

I don't know, Chihuahuas can get pretty feisty! Really though, I would not feel very safe with one compared to a Rotweiler, a Shepherd or a Mastiff.

My dog does make me feel safer. He is very in tune to noises and things going on outside. His bark sounds fierce. He is a friendly dog and never bites but if someone tried to attack us I think he would protect us.

My dog is so nice to everybody. He would not be a threat to anybody so no he does not help me feel any safer in my house.

I don't know what I would do without my dogs. I have a lab and a lab mix, they are the most loyal dogs in the world and they would never let anything or anyone hurt me.

I think having dogs make a lot of people feel safer. Dogs are such loyal animals that if anyone would try and hurt you they would protect you from your attacker.

I also agree with the breed difference. A chihuahua wouldn't really make me feel safe either.
