In CT, supposedly it is a felony to strike a Healthcare Worker. But I can tell you right now, that if you call the police on a patient or familoy member who either has struck you or who has threatened to strike you, disciplinary action is taken against you from the hospital because you weren't able to de-escalate the situation and because "it sheds a negative light on the hospital".
Why is violence against healthcare workers tolerated? Does anyone have suggestions to get the hospitals to wake up and care about their employees safety?
I have no idea to be honest. I've seen many situations ,where some patients have even tried to injure the healthcare worker seriously, but no action was taken against them afterwards. But if the healthcare worker responds to the violonce he gets fired and will probably be shown on tv
Part of the problem with working in the healthcare field is that some of the clients being dealt with may have violent tendencies due to mental illness
I don't think that there is a huge increase in the population suffering from mental illness unless you work in a behavioural health unit. However you are more likely to encounter violent drugs, people with drug problems and the likes.
More importantly there are episodes of violence associated with the refusal to supply narcotics, or methodone to patients.
I don't think violence of any sort should be tolerated. That would be difficult to be a nurse and have to stand for it. Is this the practice everywhere? I've never heard about it before.
Working in the healthcare profession I have come across a couple of threatening situations. I immediately went to my supervisor with my concerns. I felt much safer knowing that I had the support of my staff members.
It can get tense in a health care environment. A lot of patients will get upset and end up hiting their doctor over something the doctor cannot cure or fix. Very sad.
