Do many, if any schools teach self defence now?

When I was in high school we all-male and female, were given the chance to take a self defence class. It was a wonderful opportunity for some to partake for the first time, and others of us to renew skills.

But I don't hear of it being taught now. Why is this?

They give karate classes now in the school when I used to read. But they don't call it for self defense. It falls in extra activity there.

Now I have never heard of martial arts being taught as part of a school curriculum. Our school used to have a class that was taught after hours in the gym, but it was private and cost rather a lot.

Our schools don't teach anything like that. Our gym does though for children and I am going to enroll my daughter in classes when she comes of age.

My school never did anything like that. They were always cautious saying that by teaching things like that then they would be teaching kids to be violent which makes no sense really since it is teaching them to defend themselves not to go hit people.

Isn't it dangerouse to teach martial art in school to everyone? Some people in school are bullies enough without knowing how to hit people properly.

I think a decent self defnse program can also help strengthen character as well as promote proper health and conditioning

Julie, it wasn't martial arts. It was self defence and did not teach you in any way how to beat someone up, only how to defend yourself from an attack.

Exactly it is hardly teaching people to beat people up. But as you can see from some the people posting to this topic that for some reason the two are often easily confused which is why I think so many parents object.

Wow, what a great idea! I think this should be taught at all schools! What age group would be appropriate? I think the earlier the better, but more likely around grade 5 or 6 would be ideal.

I think self defense should be taught by the parents. I don't really want my child being taught self defense especially if I'm not around.

Victim advocates in many states can help you find self defense courses. They are usually sponsored by rape or violent crime crisis centers in your local areas. Also the YMCA has been known to sponsor these courses.

Not only will they help you not be a victim again, they will give you an outlet for your pain and anger as well as giving you a sense of vindication against your attacker.
