I have received an email quite a few times about keeping yourself safe. Next time I get it I will post it on here... but one of the tips that stays clear in my mind is....
If you are at a mall, do not park next to big vans that don't have windows. Also, when you get in your car, drive off! Don't stay there and balance your check book, check your cell messages, etc, do that somewhere you know you will be safe. And make sure you lock the doors as soon as you get in.

I am a little confused as to why vans without windows are considered such a risk. Yes, I can understand that you couldn't tell if someone was in the back, but still, the vast majority are just work vans.

Hmmm, I think that being careful around them is the cautious thing to do. You could say that about a lot of things.... But I think it's ok to play it safe and make sure you're safe at all times.
My relative even goes as far as to dial 911 on her cell phone in parking lots at night and have her finger on the "Send" button just in case something would happen.

When parking in a crowded parking lot try to get as close to the store as possible so that your vehicle is right in the view of the security cameras. Then as mentioned above try to park away from larger vans with dark tinted windows. That way you can see what is around you and your car.

I've always heard never to park next to a van with sliding doors. - I guess because sliding your door open and pulling someone in is a lot easier than swinging open and door and doing the same.

I was sexually assaulted in October. So for Christmas I got a little thing of pepper spray that is on my keychain. Every time I'm walking through a parking lot, I've got my finger on the button.

BlackThorn,
Actually carrying pepper spray in your purse with you at all times is a very good idea. And you definately have the right idea, any time your walking through a parking lot the pepper spray should be in your hand and ready for use. You just don't have time to dig through your purse to find it in an emergency.

Years ago I took out a video on self defense from the library and although quite comical appearing, I practiced the moves with my son. I still remember quite a few of the moves, but you know...if it ever came down to it, I probably would not try to fight, but just look for the opportunity to make a fast getaway from my assailant.

When I was younger I used to carry around a small can of hair spray in my pocket if out alone at night. I did have to use it one time and went right for the eyes. It gave me enough time to make a run for it and get to safety.

In some jurisdictions, any spray (or powder even) used to incapacitate or blind is prohibited.
Ask a lawyer, not a cop...they don't "lie" per se but they do have a vested interest in sometimes hiding the truth,
about the law where you live.

-Try to walk in a group instead of by your self. -When getting attacked instead of yelling for help, yell "fire!!!"
Using pepper spray is really good, however, if there's wind or a lock you might not be able to use it as fast. I recommend using a fogger pepper spray or a gel pepper spray.
