Aren't most martial arts weapons illegal to carry even for self protection purposes? Does anyone have any info on this?

Yup, it's considered brandishing an offensive weapon, but depending on where you live, you might be able to get permission or leniency to carry one if there is a high crime rate.

Although, I doubt a pair of nunchaku would help much in a fight unless you've properly mastered them. You're better off carrying a gun.

Yes,
a lot of ma weapons are prohibited as weapons used for self defense but not as tools to train / practise a martial art.

Therefore you can learn how each type of weapon is used by ma training.

This will allow you to use an improvised weapon or "found" weapon of the same type on the fly so to speak. See Animal's Guide to Improvised Weapons

Why call an improvised weapon a "weapon" not a "tool?" In most jurisdictions, a weapon is anything used to threaten or hurt someone. So even the pen in your pocket is a weapon, after it is sticking out of buddy's body part.
