I use ADT at my own home. After installation we contacted the police department who came out and performed a security inspection of the home and issued us a signed certificate. We turned this in to our homeowners insurance company, and actually saved enough on our homeowners insurance to pay for the monthly monitoring.
We have a home made system. It involves having certain objects placed next to other objects, so that when one falls, everything will fall and create a loud noise. How genius is that? It makes me feel very safe at night.
We've had a Brinks monitored system for several years now and have been very happy with them. I think it runs about $27.00 a month or thereabouts. We didn't wire all the windows, rather have motion detectors in certain key places. Beyond normal alarm mode, we use the chime that goes off every time a door is opened to monitor kids coming and going. The signs and decals you get when you sign up are about the biggest deterrent.

I have ADT on my home. The monthly monitoring is like $35 a month, and the initial setup was about $1,100. From what I hear it's more than what the Brinks charges for basically the same service. Live and learn I guess.
I also use ADT and have had it for about 11 years now. I have never had a problem with the system and have been very happy with it. The rates are reasonable and the service thus far has been good.
